The replacement project of IAS 39: IFRS 9 - On demand
Objectives
In November 2008 the IASB added to its agenda the replacement project of IAS 39. The main objective of the project is to simplify the classification and measurement requirements for financial instruments. The project consists of three main phases:
- Phase 1: Classification and measurement
- Phase 2: Impairment methodology
- Phase 3: Hedge accounting
Now, two years later, the project is coming in its final phase and although a lot is already known there are still a number developments to be expected in the next months.
The objective of this one-day training is to go to guide the participants through the details of phase 1 of the reform and their practical implications.
Target group
Employees of financial institutions involved with:
- IFRS-reporting and/or financial accounting;
- Back-office, Middle-office and Risk management;
- Asset and Liability Management;
- Loan loss provisioning and impairment of financial assets;
- Project Management and system development supporting process related to financial instruments.
Basic knowledge required
Programme
1 day (9 to 17h)
Morning
- Introduction and background on the reasons for the IAS 39 replacement project, overview of the three phases and current status of the project;
- In-depth analysis of the IFRS 9 guidance on classification and measurement of financial assets and financial liabilities;
Afternoon
Focus on a number of frequent issues and questions related to the implementation of phase 1, including examples and practical solutions;
- How to determine business models for financial institutions;
- Product characteristics test in practice;
- First time application of IFRS 9.
Overview of the evolution of the financial instruments standard on Impairment of financial assets;
Overview of the main changes embedded in the exposure draft on Hedge Accounting and the evolutions of the discussions concerning Macro Hedge Accounting.
Practical aspects
The course will be taught in English and all course slides and documents will be in English
