Objectives

This training, designed for starters as well as more experienced staff who wish to refresh their knowledge, is dedicated to domestic, European and international payments. A complementary component deals with the principles of cash management and the management of the working capital. This program is organized in partnership with clear2pay:

Target group

  • bank staff dealing with corporate clients;
  • project staff and IT consultants supporting financial institutions in system implementation and business reorganization projects;
  • the administrative staff of SMEs and corporates;
  • accountants, consultants and operational/IT staff working for payment processors.

Basic knowledge required

The course is designed as an introductory course and does not require any specific prior training.

Programme

Day 1

Morning:

Domestic payments

  • What is cash payment and how did giro payments come to exist?
  • What is the function of clearing and how does it work today for domestic payments?
  • What is the role of the NBB in clearing and what is its current role in domestic payments?
  • How do banks calculate their rates and what interest rates do they generally apply?
  • What are the principle payment products and what is the routing?
  • What are on-line payments and what other developments characterize domestic payments?
  • What are the laws and regulations which govern payments?

Afternoon:

European payments / SEPA

  • In which way are European payments are processed?
  • What is the function of Target2, EBA (Euro1, Step1 and Step2) in clearing and settlement?
  • What are the issues connected to the current way of making payments?
  • Objectives and calendar of SEPA.
  • What other options, besides Target2/EBA, exist for clearing and settling European payments?
  • Introduction to the new SEPA products; SEPA Credit Transfer and SEPA Direct Debit.
  • Impact of the Payment Services Directive on payments since November 2009.
  • SEPA and the strategic aspects for banks.

Day 2

Morning:

International payments and SWIFT.

  • What are the prerequisites for offering global payments to customers?
  • Routing of locally initiated £ payments.
  • Routing of locally initiated USD payments to a third party in Europe.
  • Continuous Linked Settlement (CLS) for settling foreign exchange transactions.
  • SWIFT: history, services and types of messages.
  • The new SWIFT standard: UNIFI ISO 20022 XML.
  • Detailed principles of value dating.
  • Cheque payments and clearing.

Afternoon:

The principles of Working Capital and Cash Management.

  • How can prudent cash management serve the company's objectives?
  • Working capital management as a basis for cash management.
  • Cash Conversion Cycle as an instrument of cash management.
  • Actions related to Cash flow management (Netting).
  • Advantages of payments centralization.
  • Different types of Cash Pooling.
  • Cross Border Sweeping.
  • Pooling and credit facilities.
  • Liquidity management.

 

Practical aspects

The participants of the seminar receive a syllabus (copy of the slides) and an example of the book 'International Cash Management (and Payments)' from van der Wielen.
