Financial institutions, hoping for a regulatory pause following the European Commission's Financial Services Action Plan, have instead seen the number and complexity of new regulatory initiatives increase sharply. The financial crisis has led to some radical rethinking in the EU of the approach to regulation and supervision, with a general consensus among regulators and politicians alike, that corporate governance and risk - including compliance risk - oversight will be improved drastically.
There is a need for Board Members and Senior Executives to create and inspire a vision for the future of the financial system rather than undertake piecemeal and sometimes conflicting reforms.
